Friends of Cherry Creek

The Issue

The City of Oakland Park has applied and received approval for a grant from the State Legislature to fund dredging of Cherry Creek. Such dredging would inflict severe damage if not complete destruction to the valuable and beautiful environment in the natural portion of the creek. In these times, faced as we are with tragic loss of natural habitats, the destruction this estuary, one of the last remaining examples of its kind, would be unconscionable.

Our position since the very start of this controversy has been that we will not oppose any activity that takes place outside the area of the natural creek and can be clearly and conclusively shown not to be harmful to the natural creek. The limits and controls that must be in place to render acceptable the risks to the creek's environment from dredging anywhere in the system must of course be strict and exacting.
